We are all a work in progress.

These are the words I consistently hear when people try to make me feel better about being hard on myself. One thing I have been working on lately is keeping promises to myself. I have heard the philosophy that if you can’t keep a promise to yourself, how can you keep one to anyone else. Good point, since I tend to put others, friends, family, Zoe, before me. I am the queen of excuses for myself. If anyone else needs something I am there, no questions, no ifs ands or buts, no excuses, but when I need something for myself I struggle to find the time or feel guilty for making it a priority. This is clearly a pattern which has to stop, and this passed month I made a move in the right direction.

At the beginning of May I made a commitment to myself. The hot power yoga studio I frequent was have a 30 day challenge, do 25 classes in 30 days and win a t-shirt, and a free month of unlimited yoga. I took advantage of the challenge but decided to do it Jordan-style (a.k.a take it to the max) and make it 31 classes in 31 days. I didn’t tell a lot of people, a few at the studio and some close family, I wanted to do it for myself, not because I had told so many people that I couldn’t take it back.

And I did it, I completed 31 hot power yoga classes in 31 days. Was it hard? Yes. Were there days I didn’t like yoga? Absolutely. But it was a commitment to myself that I was keeping, and one I kept. But all this yoga meant a lot more time away from Zoe. Each class meant about 2 hours all in way, on top of work, client meetings, board meetings, committee meetings, family gatherings. But she waited, and waiting, and waited, as seen above. She was, as always, a champ about it. But I also promised her that I would make it up with one on one time come June.

I kept my commitment to myself, and this month I am keeping my commitment to Zoe, and myself by making sure we go on lots of fun adventures and being easier on myself along the way. What commitments do you make to yourself that you are proud to keep?
