TGI Summer Solstice

Today is the longest day of the year.

June 21st is the summer solstice, which to many means the sun shines longer than any other day of the year. But here in Santa Barbara, summer solstice also means this:

Summer Solstice in Santa Barbara is by far one of the most fun, innovative, and celebrated days of the year. The annual Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade has people of all ages, incomes and society levels interacting with each other and engaged in the celebration. When I was five my mom did my hair done up in Princess Leia buns and I twirled my baton down State Street in the solstice parade, with an intense seriousness for the job at hand, there was no smiling, only focusing.

I am a bit older now, I still love me some Star Wars, and annually some solstice fun. There may be a time in my life where I prance in the parade again, but for now I am enjoying appreciatively from the sidelines, cheering everyone else on.

The above photo of Zoe is one of my all time favorites, not only for the halo of light around her, but the memory of her and I on the beach watching my brother catch wave after wave with his handplane as the sun set and we stole every last moment of the day. That’s what summer solstice has always been about for me, snagging the last moments of summer nights, whether it’s longer sunset beach walks, explorative hikes late into the evening, or BBQs into the dark of night.

Happy Summer Solstice to all, may you soak up all the rays of life during these extended days of sun.
